“Reading Exception” refers to a request to waive the professional reading/interpretation normally done by the department in which the service is performed. Reading exceptions are only allowed for research study-paid services. Reading exceptions are NOT allowed for any standard of care service, where the results must be a part of the participant’s clinical medical record. If a study will involve a reading exception, the Principal Investigator is responsible for:
- Notifying the Office of Clinical Research via the billing plan and submission packet.
- Notifying the IRB through appropriate ICF language.
- Following individual service department procedures/processes to promote proper billing procedures.
